New Website promotes fight against blinding trachoma

The dawn of the new year brought a new Web site to advance global efforts to combat blinding trachoma, a neglected tropical disease that affects 41 million people worldwide.

Designed and developed by Resonance, trachoma.org is the official Web site for the International Trachoma Initiative (ITI), a non-profit dedicated to eliminating trachoma by the year 2020.

Trachoma is an agonizing infection that is the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness. Eliminating trachoma requires a four-pronged strategy involving environment, facial cleanliness, antibiotics and surgery.

The new Web site communicates ITI’s efforts to implement this strategy and provides a wealth of resources to individuals and organizations. Among its features:

  • Dual language capabilities (the site may be viewed in French or English)

  • Multi-media area offering video, slideshows and audio Hi- and low-bandwidth viewing options (because those working in remote areas of the world lack high-speed Internet access)

  • Social media integration and blogging capabilities

  • Ability for visitors to make online donations

  • Full content management capabilities, so that ITI can maintain the site without outside help
